SIX SUPERSTAR INTERVIEWS IN ONE QUICK READ
Today our mini-interviews begin with the soon to be undisputed lightweight world champion Diego ?Chico? Corrales. Also front and center this morning after Diego will be Rock Newman, Andre Ward, Larry Merchant, Eddie Mustafa Muhammad, and Don Chargin. These are the mini-interviews taken from the longest running talk show in boxing history!
CORRALES LOOKING FOR VICTORY AND A LEGACY!
When I asked Diego Corrales about training under Joe Goossen, and taking his game to another level, Diego responded. ?There?s so much to do right now. I?m looking to secure my spot in history. And elevating my game is the only way I?m going to do that.? Full interview on ?Ring Talk Radio.?
ROCK IS BACK, AND THAT?S NEWMAN, NOT HUDSON!
Rock Newman is one of the few individuals I know that isn?t afraid to put people of power in their place if need be. When controlling world heavyweight champion Riddick Bowe, Newman made decisions that irked others, but that he felt were in the best interests of he and Bowe. Now Rock is working with a group of Washington DC businessmen that will promote the June 11 return of ?The Human Train Wreck? Mike Tyson vs. Kevin McBride.
NEWMAN ON WORKING WITH TYSON AS DRAW
?Last Monday at 5:25 in my suite, Tyson signed a contract. On Tuesday there was a press conference, which just what is his continuing enormous notoriety and popularity because it became the #1 sports story whether you went to Google, wherever you went Tyson was front and center.? ANDRE WARD GOING UNDER TARVER-JOHNSON II
The ?future of boxing? is in the house! Of course I?m talking about 2004 Olympic Gold Medallist Andre Ward. I started things off with my comments about his fellow Olympic teammate Andre Dirrell. I thought the other Andre was shucking and jiving too much Friday night on ESPN 2. Ward explained it as being part of a learning process. ?It?s a hard call. I tell people this is my rookie season, as it is his. I’ll be fighting in June under the Tarver-Johnson rematch on HBO.?
WARD TALKS ABOUT LIFE SINCE GOLDEN DAY IN ATHENS!
Speaking to Andre I said, you?ve come a long way, from Athens to now you’re 3 & 0 as a pro. Being on the HBO show under Bernard Hopkins, I mean what?s it been like? ?It?s really been a whirlwind. I just stay seriously grounded and ask God for guidance and strength because I?ve got a lot of competitors out there, and I?m not the top dog. (I tried to interrupt to differ) I got the credentials, but I?m not yet the top dog. There are a lot of people I?m shooting for.? Full interview on ?Ring Talk Radio.?
MERCHANT LEAVING FOR GERMANY MID WEEK
HBO?s Larry Merchant followed Ward, and he sounded a bit tired as he was deeply reading a book when my producer called. Larry and the crew are headed to Germany Wednesday to prep for this weekends Boxing After Dark card featuring Wladimir Klitschko and Eliseo Castillo. I got right to the subject at hand, does Castillo have a shot? ?He does if Klitschko is as shot as some people think he is, Castillo has a shot. He?s a Cuban fighter that?s a pretty good boxer. Not a big guy, but he?s got good movement.? Full interview on ?Ring Talk Radio.?
JOINT ASSN. OF BOXERS ?JAB? PREZ TALKS UNION & ARIZONA!
President Eddie Mustafa Muhammad has struck a chord with boxers worldwide as he organizes a boxers union in association with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. This week Muhammad will be in Phoenix, AZ for Thursday?s Arizona Athletic Commission meeting, and he will, like I did a fortnight ago, walk the Picket line in front of the building housing the Commission office on Friday to support ?Yory Boy? Campas, as he still seeks payment from promoter Peter Mc Kinn from a fight last May.
THE ARIZONA COPS WERE WAITING FOR ME!
I advised Muhammad of the fact that Mc Kinn himself and his people called the Police and tried to have me jailed on some trumped up charge. Eddie is ready for whatever Peter Mc Kinn has in store for him. Phoenix is not a friendly place I told him. Mustafa came back with, ?I don?t fear anybody. I will be definitely be in Phoenix on Thursday. If they grab me, believe me they better come strong.? After I told him they assembled a small SWAT team for little ole Pedro, Eddie put it like this. ?They better assemble the entire force.? Sounds like trouble in Arizona. RING ICON CHARGIN TALKS MARCO, LAZCANO AND REGAN!
Promoter Don Chargin is putting the final touches on a Thursday night card at the Arco Arena in Sacramento, CA. On top, once beaten (and avenged) 6?4 middleweight Eric Regan facing another elongated fighter in 6?3 Eduardo Ayala. The conversation shifted to Marco Antonio Barrera. Did he break his hand I asked? Chargin on the comeback, ?I think it?s a bad bruise. They?re supposed to let us know something tomorrow on it. I know I saw it after and it looked like a bad bruise. Of course, you never can tell with one of those small bones.?
?BOY PROMOTER? ON MARCO, LAZCANO, & MANNY TOO!
Continuing, ?That was a fight he had to make, to get his mandatory out of the way for a year. And when you have that kind of opponent, you just got to jump right and get to work to get him out of there. That?s exactly what he did.? On having his life threatened by lightweight contender Juan Lazcano. ?Juan, he?s got some problems Pedro.? When I asked whose fault was it that the PPV ?upside? clause was not in Manny Pacquiao?s contract to fight Erik Morales, Chargin pointed the finger at Pacquiao manager Rod Nazario. ?No promoter or manager should make more then the fighter,? said the Donald.
