WBC junior lightweight champion Marco Antonio Barrera easily annihilated Mzonke Fana to retain his WBC belt Saturday at the Don Haskins Center in El Paso, Texas. Barrera (60-4, 42 KOs) was in complete control from the opening bell, and leveled Fana (22-3, 8 KOs) with a crushing right hand in round two. Time was 1:48. After the fight, Fana, who went down hard, complained that referee Laurence Cole never give him a count before waving off the fight. Barrera said his future is in the hands of promoter Oscar De La Hoya, and in answer to the big question, a fourth fight with Erik Morales, Barrera commented “If that’s what the fans want, I’m here. We can talk about it.” Asked whether he thought Morales was rooting for him to win, Barrera stated, “I hope so. If he’s a good Mexican, that’s what he should have wished.” Saturday, April 9 2005
