BOXING idol Manny Pacquiao yesterday vowed to help the Manila City government in conducting free clinics for aspiring local boxers in a bid to produce a stable of future champs.
The local government yesterday opened its doors and rolled out the red carpet to give a hero’s welcome to Pacquiao, who showed the world the Filipinos’ never-say-die spirit despite losing to Mexican Erik Morales in Las Vegas recently.
Confetti rained as Pacquiao, considered an adopted son of Manila, arrived at the city hall and was greeted by hundreds of cheering employees.
Pacquiao said he accepted Mayor Lito Atienza’s invitation to assist in the city’s program as a gesture of gratitude to Manila, where he started and spent his training years at a gym in Sampaloc district.
Atienza ordered Manila Sports Council chair Ali Atienza to coordinate with Pacquiao’s camp in scheduling free clinics and training in the city’s redeveloped sports facilities.
“We are very fortunate to have him (Pacquiao) in our program. With his combined talent and experiences plus good sportsmanship, we are sure to develop well-rounded athletes,” the mayor said.
Pacquiao said that if his schedule permits, he would give training to young boxers at least twice a week.
“I would like to serve as an inspiration to others and, at the same time, encourage people, especially the youth to engage in sports. It is also a way to help them stay away from vices and instill in them values like sportsmanship and discipline,” Pacquiao said in Filipino.
Mayor Atienza expressed confidence that Pacquiao would win more fights and bring more honor to the country.
