2 Philippine title fights set in Mandaue

PHILIPPINE bantamweight champion Joel Bauya and minimumweight titlist Elmer Gejon will put their respective crowns on the block tomorrow at the New Gallera de Mandaue in Cebu.

Bauya will stake his title against an old rival, ex-World Boxing Council International bantam king Roger Galicia, while Gejon will try to retain his crown over top challenger Carlo Besdares of Kidapawan City.

The official weigh-in for all protagonists of the card dubbed “War at the Gallera” is scheduled today at the Wakee Salud Boxing Gym in Labangon, Cebu City.

Aside from the double championship, promoter Rex “Wakee” Salud said some 30 rounds of top-caliber fights are in the undercard of this first ever boxing event to be held at the 4,000-capacity Gallera.

“We assure fight fans of their money’s worth,” said Salud. “This is the first time we’re holding a boxing event in this new sports center, and definitely this is not the last. We expect great fights in the mold of the recent (Manny) Pacquiao-(Erik) Morales clash.”

Bauya and Galicia, both battle-scarred ringsters, are taking their old rivalry in front of discriminating Cebu fans.

Bauya, who trains at the L&M Gym, is out to prove that the erstwhile Mandaluyong standout Galicia, who now trains in Cebu, won’t be able to keep up with his pace in their 12-round clash.

“Bauya has been training since January,” said Bauya’s trainer, Emil Romano, in Filipino when he arrived in Cebu the other day. “He’s more than ready for this fight,”

Other bouts pit JR Sollano against Ricky Gozo; Alex Aroy versus Michael Rodriguez; Charles Delada against Jerry Lota; Apol Suico versus Manny Pacquoan, and Jomar Matbagon versus Alvin Mundala.
