De Soto, TX – Errol Spence, Jr. knew he was in position to win his second National Police Athletic League (PAL) Championship in three years early on when he knocked down both his opponent and the referee with the same punch.
Spence won the tournament championship Sunday morning at the Municipal Auditorium in San Antonio, TX. Fighting at the welterweight division limit of 152 lbs., Spence had to win five fights to earn the title and it gives him a leg up on qualifying for the prestigious 2012 London, England-bound U.S. Olympic team.
Spence already won the U.S. National Amateur Tournament in 2010 and his next big test is the same USA Nationals in Colorado Springs, CO in March 2011.
Spence, 20, is trained by former professional boxer Derrick James at the Maple Avenue Boxing Gym on the fringe of downtown Dallas.
