MANILA, Philippines?A record for a river.
The Philippines unofficially set a world record for the most number of runners in a single race after 116,086 participants showed up in the ?10.10.10: A Run for the Pasig River? on Sunday.
The race surpassed by over 6,000 the 24-year record set by the ?Bay to Breakers? 12K race in San Francisco, California, which had 110,000 participants on May 18, 1986.
ABS-CBN Foundation managing director Gina Lopez made the announcement Monday after auditing firm Sycip, Gorres and Velayo (SGV) validated and verified the race figures.
Lopez said the ?Kapit Bisig Para sa Ilog Pasig? (KBPIP), which spearheaded the fun run, was already preparing the documentation required by the Guinness Record to make the feat official.
The Pasig run also easily beat the Philippine mark of 28,331 participants achieved in the ongoing 34th Milo Marathon during its Metro Manila qualifying leg on July 4.
Seven-division boxing champion and Sarangani Rep. Manny Pacquiao, former President Fidel V. Ramos and Vice President Jejomar Binay led the star-studded run, which aimed to raise funds and stir awareness for the clean-up drive of Pasig River.
Lopez said the confirmation of the new Guinness record might come in two weeks after the Philippines had submitted the video and photo documentation and the reports compiled by the race organizers, SGV and other involved agencies.
