Z the guru

Z GORRES never achieved his dream of becoming a world champion because of an untimely retirement. However, he has a chance to help other fighters attain what he didn?t, by sharing his vast knowledge of the sweet science as a mentor to the young pugilists of the ALA Gym.

?He will be developing young fighters into world- caliber fighters,? ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer told Sun.Star Cebu of Gorres?s new role in the ALA Gym.

Gorres, 27, is going to be the newest member of the training team of ALA Gym and will be in charge of the development of young prospects fresh from the amateur ranks.

?He will be handling the amateurs who turned pro, the new batch of young ALA fighters,? said the young promoter.

Aldeguer said Gorres?s passion is to train fighters but ALA Promotions is giving him a bigger job aside from being trainer.

?He will play a major role. He will be more than just a trainer. He will be flying with the fighters as the team liaison,? he said.

Gorres, who has already started to walk without using his cane, will be starting on his new role soon. Aldeguer believes he will be a successful teacher.

?He?s very much respected. He?s one of the best fighters technically. His knowledge of the game is very high and he has the passion to train.?

Gorres ended his career prematurely after suffering a life-threatening head injury in his 10-round bout with Luis Melendez last year. He won that fight by a lopsided 10-round unanimous decision.

Meanwhile, Gorres will be receiving financial assistance from his close friend Gerry Pe?alosa, through the proceeds of his retirement bout last Sunday in Zamboanga City.

Pe?alosa ended his decorated 21-year pro career with a bang by stopping 22-year-old Thai opponent Yodsaengkeng Kietmangee in the fourth round of their scheduled 10-round bout.

The 38-year-old Pe?alosa hung his gloves with an impressive record of 55 wins, eight losses and two draws with 37 knockouts.

He has won two world titles in two different weight categories, the bantamweight and super flyweight.

Pe?alosa won the World Boxing Council super flyweight title in 1997 by a split decision win over Japanese Hiroshi Kawashima.

He grabbed his second division world title, the World Boxing Organization bantamweight crown, 10 years after by knocking out Mexican Jhonny Gonzalez.
