While I had Shane Mosley a comfortable winner last night over Sergio Mora at the Los Angeles Staples Center, I don’t believe he won very much.
Mosley didn’t fight himself into another big fight on his own merits. He was exposed as a 39 – year-old boxer coming toward hopefully the end of a fabulous career.
If Mosley lands a big fight, it would be for the same reason Antonio Margarito landed his November 12 fight with Manny Pacquiao.
Simply meaning his promoter has enough juice to keep the promotion in-house rather than bring in an outside fighter. Mayweather vs. Mosley back on May 1 is another example.
So while I had Mosley winning nine rounds to three in an a listless affair hardly worthy of its big event HBO PPV trappings, Mosley might be the big loser as even his closest confidants have to tell him he has lost more than a step and just isn’t as slick as he used to be if they are at all honest.
The fight business isn’t like any other business so I feel qualified to say Mosley should be looking for a dignified exit from prize fighting. It will be the most difficult thing he has had to do. More dangerous than any opponent he has ever faced.
Mosley, if he needs the money after a brutal divorce, could find “safe” fights to take where he wouldn’t risk getting too hurt, but that would be a sad end to his marvelous career in which nobody has ever asked for a refund after one of his efforts.
Mora? Well I don’t know exactly who would have been impressed with his performance and who would parlay last night’s performance into something bigger for him. He doesn’t make for compelling fights.
The “Latin Snake” might be much to mentally tough for his own good.
