DALLAS, TX – Dallas featherweight boxer Roberto Marroquin received one of the largest ovations when introduced to the media and fans yesterday at the Manny Pacquiao – Antonio Margarito press conference at Cowboys Stadium.
Marroquin is flying high. He won his last fight August 7th in Sonora, Mexico with a 2nd round TKO over Jesus Quintero to build his impressive record up to 15-0 (12 KO’s). He weighed in at his heaviest 126 and felt comfortable carrying the added couple of pounds.
He’s now promoted by Bob Arum’s Top Rank and being trained by popular Freddie Roach in Hollywood, CA at the Wild Card Gym.
Marroquin will be busy over the next 10 weeks with two fights and a trip to The Philippines.
‘This press conference was very motivating for me,” said Marroquin from the floor of the press conference as it was breaking up. “From here I go straight to my workout. It’s a passion. Everything I do is boxing. It’s great to be motivated to train,” he added.
On October 16th the southpaw has a tuneup fight at Winstar Casino in Oklahoma.
“All the details are not pinned down yet as we can’t let it conflict with the November 13th fight here at Cowboys Stadium underneath the Pacquiao vs. Margarito fight,” said Marroquin.
The November 13th fight is scheduled to be broadcast live on pay per view and be for the WBC’s USNBC Featherweight Title. The opponent is yet to be announced.
“My fight on the Pacquiao vs. Clottey card back in March was also supposed to be televised live but it didn’t work out. So this fight November 13th is even more motivating for me.”
In between these fights Marroquin is scheduled to head to Baguio City, The Philippines so trainer Roach can keep an eye on him while he trains Pacquiao for the Margarito fight.
While all this is going on Marroquin, through his marketing agent, Brown Boy Media’s Michael A. Montoya, has picked up Dr Pepper as a sponsor.
He’s also putting the finishing touches on a website, is on facebook, and taking classes at Northwood University (four year college) where he is a junior majoring in accounting. Being a CPA is his long-term goal. He takes a lot of classes on line to work around his busy schedule.
On his next trip back to Hollywood he will be looking for a new apartment as he has been staying at a nearby hotel from the Wild Card in his previous stays there.
