Having announced a few months back that he is done with boxing for the year, Floyd Mayweather Jr is now saying he might fight before the year ends against a yet to be named opponent and away from the comfort of his Las Vegas home – in Dubai, UAE.
All the while, Floyd is leaving little doubt he is not fighting Filipino world welterweight boxing champion Manny Pacquiao.
Floyd, I bet, is just waiting for Pacquiao and Antonio Margarito to seal their fight contract before he announces the exact date and name of his next opponent.
That way, he will remain in the conversation mix and sell his next fight using Pacquiao as is selling point. Yes, he is fighting Pacquiao. Sorry folks, it is not atop the ring but at the box office.
Mayweather definitely has mastered the art of flair and dramatics. A master carpetbagger.
Remember how he tried to steal the thunder from the Pacquiao-Hatton fight when he announced he is picking up then lightweight Juan Manuel Marquez just hours before the Filipino and Englishman went to a phone booth brawl? Or how he belatedly, after more than a decade, agreed to fight 38-year old Shane Mosley, just as the world was already engrossed in the intriguing match-up between Pacquiao and Miguel Angel Cotto?
Mayweather cannot stomach a man who took the challenge of fighting, in succession, three of the best welterweights (Cotto, Clottey and Margarito) who he avoided when he was ?king of the ring? before he ?retired? in 2008.
His ego is driving him crazy. He wants to pull the rug from under Pacquiao but he fears the Filipino ringmaster.
And so, he wants to match Pacquiao story for story but not punch by punch.
He wants to get into the head of Manny but the Filipino southpaw has him already under his skin.
Mayweather is increasingly making himself a basket case for the asylum.
Remember, as the Greeks are saying, whom the gods wish to destroy, they make crazy.
Mayweather thinks the shortest distance between two points is the detour. Funny.
