Earlier today at the Commerzbank-Arena in Frankfurt, Germany, Wladimir Klitschko successfully defended his IBF and WBO heavyweight titles with a dominating 10th round stoppage over ?The Nigerian Nightmare? Samuel Peter. While Peter was game and aggressive he was simply a class below his Ukrainian opponent and had no answer as to how to get inside of Klitschko?s massive reach.
Five years ago the two men met in Atlantic City as Klitschko suffered three knockdowns before hanging on to win a unanimous decision as scores of 114-111 were read across the board. This time around no judges were needed as Klitschko began to wear Peter down with an accumulation of punches as Peter was visibly tired by the 4th round. Referee Robert Byrd stepped in to halt the action after a viscous volley of punches had Peter reeling in the 10th.
With the win Klitschko improves his record to 55-3 with 49 knockouts but at 34 years of age it remains to be seen where he goes from here. He is no longer partnered with HBO, the sport?s premier network, and the most attractive fight on the horizon, a bout with WBA heavyweight champion David Haye, may not come to fruition. But for now, all is well in Klitschko?s world.
