I spoke with famed fight trainer Freddie Roach and got a nice update on the latest with Manny Pacquiao Vs. Antonio Margarito. Roach also shared his thoughts on the Floyd Mayweather saga. Before we talked boxing, Freddie chimed in on the upcoming August 28th MMA fight between James “Lights Out” Toney and UFC legend Randy Couture. Roach is predicting that Couture will ultimately get Toney onto the ground, and that’s where the end will come. With that said, Roach believes that Toney will probably pass out before he taps out. Time will tell on that prediction.
Pacquiao Vs. Margarito – Roach quote ” I am confident in my fighter (Pacquiao) and I do predict a knockout along the way. Margarito is a big guy, so his size will be a little bit difficult. Is he a big puncher? We will see. I will be watching his hand wrapping the whole entire time.”
Mayweather possibility – Roach quote ” I can’t believe that this fight isn’t happening. Maybe with Don King something can get done, with him anything can happen. We agreed to everything then Mayweather said no negotiations were going on, and that busted in his face. That leaves one thing, Mayweather is scared to lose. I think ultimately the fight will happen.”
On Mayweather’s legacy – Roach quote – ” This is going to hurt his legacy terribly. When people hear Mayweather talking about he’s as good as “Sugar” Ray Robinson, they will all laugh.”
Chavez Jr off to the PI to work with Pacquiao – Roach quote ” I am bringing Chavez with me to the Philippines to work with Manny Pacquiao. Chavez will spar with Manny and he will help us get Manny ready for this next fight. It will be good work for both of them.”
Mississippians are mixed on Margarito’s return. Some think that he should not be allowed to fight again since being caught cheating. Some Mississippians believe that Margarito deserves a second chance, and that he has served his suspension, so it’s time to let him fight. It’s about a 50/50 split here in Mississippi with those in the boxing world that I have spoken with.
