Pacquiao to fat solons: try boxing

MANILA, Philippines ? World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight champion and Sarangani Rep. Manny Pacquiao has a fitness advice to his fellow congressmen who want to shed off weight: try boxing and lose pounds quickly.

Pacquiao, whose speed and agility inside the boxing ring have brought him 7 world titles in 7 divisions, attests to the health wonders of a rigorous boxing regimen.

?Sabi ko nga sa ibang congressmen na kasama ko, mas magandang exercise ang boxing (I told my colleagues at work, boxing is the better exercise),? he said in an interview with ANC?s World Tonight on Friday (August 13).

Pacquiao said those who want to take up his challenge don?t have to look for opponents in order to to reap the benefits of boxing. He said recreational boxing will do.

?Hindi por que nagtraining ka ng boxing, magiging boksingero ka na (Boxing training will not make you a boxer overnight),? he said.

He said the cardiovascular exercises in recreational boxing make it an ideal way for overweight legislators to lose excess pounds.

?Mas maganda kasi ang boxing kasi mabilis kang pumayat. In one week, makikita mo ang diperensya ng nabawas mo[ng timbang] (Boxing is the fastest way to lose weight. You?ll immediately see results in just a week?s training),? Pacquiao said.

Meanwhile, the boxing superstar said he is not having a hard time fulfilling his duties as the lone representative of the province of Sarangani.

Pacquiao said it hasn’t been difficult for him since he really wants to be of service to his constituents.

?Tingin ko sa pagseserbisyo, hindi naman mahirap basta mahal mo ang ginagawa mo, gusto mo talagang makatulong (I think serving others is not difficult if you love what you do and you really want to help),? the first-term congressman said.

Since Congress opened last month, Pacquiao has been getting a lot of attention for his activities as a neophyte lawmaker.

Early this week, he tried to stop a heated debate about former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo among some of his colleagues. (Click here for related story.)

Pacquiao?s plan to train within the Batasan Pambansa grounds for his November 13 bout versus Antonio Margarito also gained media attention. (Click here for related story.)

He dropped the plan after House Speaker Feliciano “Sonny” Belmonte said that holding camp inside the Batasan was not a good idea.
