In the movie “ENOUGH”, starring Jennifer Lopez, where she is repeatedly beaten by her husband and finally comes to terms with the situation by taking matters into her own hands.
In today’s FANHOUSE column written by boxing editor Lem Satterfield, the ongoing cries from Oscar de la Hoya demanding Antonio Margarito be “banned for life” have become like Lopez, except de la Hoya cannot take matters into his own hands.
In Satterfield’s article, de la hoya preaches his “love for HIS sport” and claims that anyone who does anything to tamper with the fists or gloves should be banned for life.
Carefully chosen words by someone who is the biggest hypocrite in “HIS sport” of boxing.
When it was verified following the Shane Mosley vs Oscar de la Hoya Light Middleweight Championship fight almost seven years ago (September of 2003), that Shane Mosley was definitely a CHEATER and a LIAR for saying he never used performance enhancing drugs of any kind and later forced to admit the usage, it was wondered aloud by most in the boxing community, “What will Oscar do”?
Seven years is a VERY long time for some and apparently seven years is ENOUGH for de la Hoya to forget that he was like a parish priest during Saturday confession, when proclaiming his friend and business partner Mosley “made a mistake and it just can never happen again”.
The only thing missing was Oscar telling his pal, “Shane, say 4 Our Fathers, 10 Hail Mary’s, and perform an act of contrition”.
There was no tampering with the gloves or fists, but Mosley had enough of a performance edge that he was able to give Oscar a good old-fashioned butt whipping.
There was no attempt by de la Hoya to secure a rematch with Mosley to avenge the by now piling up “W’s” on his once unblemished boxing resume which, in itself, was quite strange.
There was no calling Shane Mosley “a cheater and a liar”, which he most definitely is/was, by Oscar de la Hoya or the third member of the Golden Boy triangle, Bernard Hopkins.
Instead, life went on it’s merry way and Mosley continues to fight, Hopkins continues to fight, and de la hoya continues to…
There is one that Oscar de la Hoya has yet to learn about the world of business and that is “you cannot have it both ways”.
Oscar de la Hoya and his Golden Boy Promotions endeavor has accumulated a nice little empire in “HIS” sport of boxing.
That he now sees himself as the EMPEROR, he had better be careful that his empire doesn’t come tumbling down, all because he refuses to keep his mouth shut.
Is Oscar de la Hoya just a good friend and even better ambassador of “HIS sport”, or is there another set of rules applied when you are a member of the Golden Boy Team?
Antonio Margarito can easily come into the fold of Golden Boy Promotions and it wouldn’t take long for Oscar to proclaim, “Antonio made a mistake and it just can never happen again”. Oscar would validate the change of heart by laying the blame solely at the feet of Javier Capetillo.
Ahem…that is where the blame has ALWAYS been laid whether Oscar can remember that or not.
Then it would be Bob Arum and Top Ranks’ turn to castigate Antonio Margarito…
