Another potentially exciting boxing match falls by the wayside, are we to be surprised in the year of what could have been?
Reports from ESPN and Boxingscene inform us that Mexican Alfredo ?El Perro? Angulo has passed up an opportunity to fight with the middleweight champion Sergio Martinez.
Apparently $750,000 is not enough for Angulo to sign on the dotted line and battle one of the best fighters in the sport before millions of viewers on HBO.
Martinez had agreed for the bout to be contested at a catchweight ranging between 155 and 156 pounds (the middleweight limit is 160 pounds) being that Angulo has campaigned as a junior middleweight.
For the record, Martinez earned the same payday of $750,000 when he took the title from Kelly Pavlik earlier this year.
Angulo?s veteran manager Mike Criscio publicly stated that he felt Angulo should have accepted the offer as it was fair, but his fighter wanted a million dollars to face Martinez.
Gary Shaw, Angulo?s promoter, was not available for comment at the time of this article?s publishing for comment, but had stated recently that a fight between his fighter and Martinez would not take place at the middleweight limit – an issue that was seemingly erased by Martinez?s willingness to battle at a catch-weight.
One has to wonder who Angulo thinks he will fight to garner a payday anywhere near $750,000. As of right now, Angulo is a virtual unknown and not one of boxing A-list figures.
Angulo, a resident of Downy, California, joins Paul William?s amoung the ranks of those who have dodged Martinez in recent times and adds to Martinez?s unofficial title of ?Boxing?s Most Avoided Man.?
Portraying a tough-guy image with a dog collar wrapped around his neck when he enters the ring and even bringing in a pit bull into the ring before a fight, fans may wonder if Angulo is a throw-back brawler his fans believe he is or merely the fighter who wilted away in his toughest fight to date against Kermit Cintron?
Is Angulo all bark and no bite?
Boxing?s faithful can put legendary rockband Queen?s memorable anthem ?Another One Bites The Dust? on repeat in ther iPods because there seems to be more fights falling apart than coming to fruition in recent months.
