There have been many great Mexican fighters in the sport of boxing. I can sit here and run off some names but I don?t want to leave anyone out. I will simply just jot down some of my personal favorites. We have the late great Salvador Sanchez, Julio Cesar Chavez, Ricardo Lopez, Juan Manuel Marquez, Marco Antonio Barrera, and Erik Morales.
As great as the fighters mentioned above are, they all have one statistic in common. None of them never won 4 titles in four different weight classes. Marquez, Barrera, and Morales are all still desperately still trying, but the final goal looks further and further.
Not to take anything away from these legends but I simply feel that Marquez, Barrera, and Morales are trying way too late. Myself along with Diamondboxing?s very own Dr. Baio, recently texed back and forth on what a fight it would have been if Marquez and Morales would have fought. Dr. Baio and I even agreed that heck even if they fought now, the scrap would be one to not miss.
So why didn?t any of the Mexican greats ever win 4 in 4? Were the fighters held back? Was time against them? Who really knows but them, they are still all great in my eyes. I feel that the goal was not reached by Chavez, Morales, Marquez, and Barrera because as skilled and as tough as they are, the weight dictates thus causing their head to touch the roof.
Will we ever see a Mexican fighter win 4 in 4? Time will only tell. As of right now, if I were to be asked on who I feel has a shot at reaching this great goal, I would have to say Juan Carlos Burgos and Abner Mares. I feel that Mares is a better all around fighter than Burgos is, but Burgos has a better shot because of his tall height and punch. It?s easier for me to picture the 5′10″ Burgos finish the quest at 147 than seeing Mares reach the goal for 4 at 135. As I said, time can only tell.
Speaking of Mexican fighters, Giovani Segura the Mexican banger will try to hand Ivan Calderon his first loss this weekend. I couldn?t reach Segura, but I was however able to reach Puerto Rican great Ivan Calderon for a short chat.
Ivan, que pasa, are you ready to face Segura? How are you feeling?
IC- I feel real good, I am very ready for Segura.
It?s going to be exciting because it pairs up a banger against the boxer and on top of that one is Mexican and the other Puerto Rican.
IC- Yes, it?s going to be very exciting. Segura is looking to try to take my head off and I am looking to teach him a boxing lesson.
Does anything about Segura worry you at all?
IC- I have seen it all, I can adjust to whatever pitch is thrown so I can answer the question. Besides, I had a great camp.
Is there a better pure boxer that is better than you out there?
IC- Many say that Floyd is and to be honest, Floyd is very good at what he does. But as I mentioned to you the last time, Floyd is flat footed now. Floyd no longer boxes you on his toes. I still do. They say that my age is showing, well I say that I am getting sharper.
