Last night at the Savvis Center in St. Louis, Missouri, WBC and IBF Jr. Welterweight champion Devon Alexander pulled out a hard-fought decision win over former champion Andriy Kotelnik in front of his hometown crowd. The undercard was notable, with Tavoris Cloud pounding out a gritty victory over Glen Johnson and Cornelius Bundrage stopping Cory Spinks in the 5th round, but much of the focus of the night was towards a fighter who didn?t even lace up a pair of gloves.
Having been hanging out with promoter Don King heavily the past two weeks, Floyd Mayweather Jr. was in town as an invited guest to the event. Donned in all black, Mayweather was indeed spotted ringside and received much fanfare when his mug was flashed on the HBO screen for the world to see. Commentator Bob Pappa mentioned that they had hoped to track Mayweather down to get a few words from the 33-year old but apparently those request were shot down, as Mayweather was simply in town to enjoy the festivities and not focus on his own personal career.
The superstar fighter had everyone on pins and needles earlier this year when it looked as though he and Manny Pacquiao were possibly on a collision course for November 13th. But the negotiations again would take a sour turn and the fight doesn?t appear to be on its way anytime soon and Mayweather?s continued silence has only added to the frustration. His reuniting with King is yet another interesting storyline in his career and people are speculating the two will be joining forces in a much more professional level very soon. If that does indeed happen perhaps a fight with Pacquiao can be looked at again.
