Well, what a difference a few weeks can make. Just a few weeks ago the entire boxing world pretty much gave up on seeing Mayweather Vs. Pacquiao. One side said negotiations took place, the other side said that they did not. One side is surely lying, and the other side is telling the truth. Regardless of that mess, in comes the legendary Don King.
Floyd Mayweather has been seen hooked to King’s hip for the past week or so. Just last night Floyd was sitting ringside right next to King watching the Devon Alexander fight in St Louis. King has made fights happen for decades, so if there is anyone alive that can make the big fight happen, it’s him. Mayweather and King are both money loving individuals.
It appears as if Floyd and King are moving right along in this new relationship, and by all accounts this is a prelude to NEW negotiations. According to Don King, Mayweather is not happy with how he was treated by Golden Boy Promotions. Floyd won’t be getting any sympathy cards from the fans, but nevertheless, Don King is listening, and that’s all that matters right now.
Mississippians shared their thoughts this weekend with this writer as I visited some of the local sports bars in Jackson, MS. I spoke with two fans, one Pacquiao fan and one Mayweather fan. Ben Horn, of Byram, Mississippi supports Manny Pacquiao. He had plenty to say about the new Don King factor, and pulled no punches, ‘Look, I don’t care who negotiates. It could be Don King, or Queen Elizabeth for all I care, just make the darn fight happen. Manny has stepped up so now it’s time for Floyd to do the same.’
I also spoke with a big Floyd Mayweather fan. Pete Ward of Hernando, Mississippi a frequent spectator at the Fights at the Fitz in Tunica, MS had this to say, ‘ Floyd is a businessman. He will bring in whoever will make him the most money. He’s not afraid of Pacquiao. Anyone who really thinks Floyd is truly afraid to fight Pacquiao needs their head examined. Floyd will win, and he will win rather easily.’
Don King may just be able to put this fight back together. Let us all cross our fingers and hope.
