Roach clinic for RP team is cancelled

There won?t be a trip to the Wild Card Boxing Club of Freddie Roach for the national boxing team that is revving up for the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou, China.

Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP) executive director Ed Picson revealed in the PSA Forum on Tuesday that Wild Card guru Freddie Roach has informed him that he won?t be able to conduct clinics for the men and women?s team owing to his tight schedule.

Picson said Roach, known for his impressive work with Manny Pacquiao, will be too busy attending to the needs of another fair-haired boy in Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., son of the legendary Julio Sr., who has a fight set for September 11 in Culiacan, Mexico.

Picson said Roach had earlier agreed to open the doors of the famed sweat shop on Vine Street in Hollywood to the amateur fighters before scrapping it.

Although the Roach clinic would have been the highlight of the boxers? training, ABAP has other activities lined up for the team.

There?s the appointment with the Filipino head coach of the boxing team of the University of San Francisco, Angelo Merino, who plans to conduct a box-off involving Filipino-American hopefuls on August 21.

A stint in the Eddie Heredia Gym in downtown Los Angeles, the home of Oscar De La Hoya during his amateur days, is also on the calendar.

Included in the ABAP delegation to the US are Picson, coaches, Roel Velasco and Pat Gaspi, and fighters Charly Suarez, Victorio Saludar, Rey Saludar, Joegin Ladon, Delfin Boholst and Gerson Nietes and female punchers Josei Gabuco, Alice Kate Aparri, Annie Albania and Nesthy Petecio.
