The boxing world anxiously awaits a Top Rank Promotions created deadline for Floyd Mayweather Junior to sign a contract to fight against Manny Pacquiao sometime this Fall.
On Top Rank?s website, a countdown clock has been placed marking the days, hours, minutes, and even seconds remaining for Mayweather to make his decision.
Yesterday afternoon at Los Angeles International Airport the opinion of fight fans were mixed when it came to Mayweather?s big decision regarding the boxing?s biggest potential fight.
?Mayweather is scared,? said Israel Gomez of La Puente. ?He does not want to loss that ?O? against Pacquiao. He won?t sign.?
Many commuters believed that Mayweather is avoiding Pacquiao, because he fears marring his perfect record of 41 wins. This idea would seem laughable, considering Mayweather is a prize-fighter and a 50 million dollars is at stake for a fight against the Filipino, but Gomez, like other, stuck to his opinion.
?Money don?t matter,? Gomez continued to say. ?Mayweather wants to keep his record perfect.?
Other fans were suspicious of the deadline, imposed by Top Rank boss Bob Arum – who promotes Pacquiao, and the energy the veteran promoter has put into recruiting other boxers for a fight with Pacquiao.
?I?m just saying, Arum can say what he wants to say, but where is that contract,? commented Aubury Smith of Inglewood. ?Have you seen the contract? And plus, ain?t Arum been running around trying to sign up Miguel Cotto or Antonio Margarito for a fight?
It has been well documented that Arum has never released the exact details of the alleged contract and has aggressively pursued Pacquiao?s other options, if a fight does not materialize against Mayweather. Top Rank promoted Cotto and Margarito seems to be the front-runners for a Pacquiao fight void of Floyd.
Yet, there were those who seem eternally optimistic and believe that the fight will get signed in the last second of the last minute.
?This is all for show, like WWE and Vince McMahon,? stated Rosorio Romero of Carson. ?Manny, Mayweather, and Arum, they are just building this fight up and making a big show of it. They will fight in November.?
We will all have to wait and see if Mayweather signs on the dotted line before Friday, July 16 comes to an end.
