About 28 hours to go before Bob Arum’s offer to Floyd Mayweather is off the table and I guess we can all stop holding our collective breath that a November 13, 2010 Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao fight will take place.
This was always Arum’s imposed deadline – not Mayweather’s.
But for a fight of this stature to run properly a cut-off date, rather than a deadline is necessary. Mayweather could be a sport and counter with a springtime date in 2011.
Pacquiao wants to fight somebody because he is a professional fighter and November is the ideal time for him with his new political responsibilities. But it’s not that easy anymore.
Pacquiao opponents must have a story line or a thread to a past fight or deed that brands them as worthy to fight for the throne.
I can’t imagine Arum and Pacquiao not entertaining a bid from Jerry Jones for another fight at his Cowboys Stadium. Why go back to Las Vegas if Mayweather is not involved?
But wherever a Pacquiao fight takes place it will be an event, even if the names of Margarito and Cotto are at the top of the list as opponents.
A Mayweather vs. Pacquiao fight would be monumental for the fighters and the fans. But both fighters are secure in their history even if “The Fight” doesn’t happen. But it would sure be ashame as they are both at the same weight, skill level and in their primes. The cultural differences alone make this an exciting event for the fans.
Mayweather seems to be the most fragile of the two as he has a perfect 41-0 record to protect and that alone could be holding this fight up. I have said previously that I didn’t think Mayweather were afraid of Pacquiao but I just don’t know.
Will Mayweather even have an arrogant remark or two for passing on this fight or will he let this opportunity quietly slip away.
Income tax reasons or Uncle Roger’s upcoming court date could also be playing a part in this fight not happening in November. A springtime fight could make all the difference in this fight ever happening.
