Floyd Mayweather should follow Lebron James’ game plan

Floyd ?Money? Mayweather and the sport of boxing could take a page from the National Basketball Association, ESPN, and Lebron James? playbook by televising Mayweather?s decision to fight Manny Pacquiao on November 13.

Tomorrow night on ESPN James will be part of a one-hour televised special where the hoops star will publicly pick the team he will be signing a multi-million dollar contract with for the next several years.

Saturday, July 24, 2010 looks to be a slow night on HBO with their 8 P.M. slot featuring a run of Terminator Salvation. Why not spice up the evening and bring in an audience of several million viewers as Floyd Mayweather Junior makes the decision?

Could you think of a better way to build up the fight for a very minimal production cost? All HBO would need if Jim Lampley, Larry Merchant, and Emmanuel Stewart discussing the significance of the fight for 15 to 20 mintues, Mayweather with his announcement for ten minutes, and some stock footage of Mayweather and Pacquiao.

If boxing wanted to push the envelope and embrace the new era of social media, Top Rank and Mayweather Promotions could broadcast the announcement free of charge on YouTube, Ustream, or Facebook. Imagine the digital firestorm fueled by Twitter and Facebook when Mayweather either blows off the fight or accepts it. Boxing would be on the binary tongues of millions upon millions of fans.

A blatant rip off ?King James?, yes, but as it has been said before, the best ideas were meant to be stolen.
