Boxing’s social media queen, Madelyn Arias-Aviles, got me started on this kick by Facebooking (is it a verb, like Tweeting, no?) that the chi-chi Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas is SOLD OUT for the weekend of Nov. 13.
If that rings a bell, it may literally ring boxing’s most anticipated bell, the Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Manny Pacquiao super bout which Bob Arum told nine different media outlers, exclusively of course, is now all up to Mayweather’s approval for that date.
So I checked in on the MGM Grand website and with a reservations operator and it seems the folks who run the cavernous hotel-casino with the 18,000-seat Grand Garden Arena are prepping for a Big Event weekend then also.
The site touts rooms for as low as $69 but that’s another Vegas come on.
Boxing Mecca, MGM Grand in Las Vegas
For the week before Money May-Pacman you can get a room for Nov. 4, 5 and 6, at the rates of $160 for Thursday and $180 for Friday and Saturday nights.
The fight crowd, not even the Pacmaniacs, does not arrive that early.
I asked a phone reservations woman about Nov. 11, 12 and 13.
Bingo!
Subject to change, as she duly noted…Nov. 11 is a bargain at $80.
If you would like to keep your bed for Friday and Saturday night rather than sleep on the pavment on The Strip, the rates skyrocket to $200 for the 12th and to $290 for Fight Night.
Those rates are not an outrage but expect them to jump higher as the supply dwindles. Even with its 5,000 or so rooms, the MGM will fill up fast for this Super Bowl type of boxing event.
Ok, pugilistic pilgrims, you’ve been warned.
One smart tour group operator has been running adverts in The Boxing News in the UK for package deals for Mayweather-Pacquiao “subject to confirmation.”
That guy seems to be ahead of the game or, in this case, the Super Fight.
