Don?t be fooled by Floyd Mayweather?s retirement threats. The truth of the matter is that Mayweather is a very emotional individual and often times exhibits very melodramatic behavior. After his win over Carlos Baldomir for the linear welterweight title in the fall of 2006, he cried at the post fight press conference about how hard his life had been and how he was underappreciated despite all his accomplishments even though he had just boxed his way to an easy twelve round decision over the mediocre yet overachieving Carlos Baldomir. And Mayweather acted as though he had just been through the Thrilla in Manila or the Bowe-Holyfield trilogy when in fact the fight with Baldomir was an over glorified sparring session.
Who knows, maybe the pressures of training and boxing pretty much since birth are too much for him to handle along with all the drama that he had to endure during his childhood. Floyd Senior got shot in the leg right in front of little Floyd when he was just a baby and Junior has stated that his mother battled with drug abuse when he was growing up. Also his father went to prison for five years for cocaine trafficking and missed out on watching his son compete in the 1996 olympics after molding him into a world class amateur. So take Mayweather?s retirement threats with a grain of salt because in spite of his bravado about being the sports cash cow and the greatest fighter ever, he uses that bravado to shield his insecurities that stem from his non-traditional upbringing.
Trust Floyd Mayweather will fight again and he will probably fight Manny Pacquiao this fall. Mayweather?s insecurities manifest themselves in these retirement threats, but the fact remains Floyd Mayweather spends money like water. We have all seen his regular visits to the Las Vegas Sport books on HBO?s 24/7 and despite the fact that he is earning twenty million dollar paydays, his lavish spending habits require that he laces up the gloves again. Just last summer a number of reports came out about his finances. The Associated Press reported that he owed more than six million dollars to the IRS and according to Clark County records, four different home owner associations in Nevada alone had filed liens against Mayweather, and JP Morgan Chase had filed a lawsuit against Floyd for failing to make payments on a Mercedes Maybach 57s. Now according to reports, Mayweather made good on all his debts following his fight with Juan Manuel Marquez, but still its incredible to think that with all the money he made in his fights with Ricky Hatton and Oscar De La Hoya in 2007 that with in eighteen months of those fights he was having financial problems.
That?s the thing Mayweather needs to keep fighting to keep the money flowing because it flows out just as fast as it comes in. Trust me Floyd will probably be like Roy Jones Junior and will probably still be fighting in five years, begging to fight the best fighters in the sport in order to try to squeeze every last penny out of his career that he can when he should have done it in his prime.
