Morales steps up training for Pacquiao fight

MEXICAN Erik “El Terrible” Morales is now training in the mountains of Mexico’s Central Ceremonial Otomi as he braces for a tough bout against Filipino idol Manny Pacquiao on March 19 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Morales is expected to spend a little more than six weeks at the Otomi mountains to get enough high-altitude training.

The former three-division world champion has been holed up at the Otomi mountains working out in spartan-like conditions accompanied by trainers Oswaldo Alvarado and Fernando Fernandez, a substitute for his father-trainer who earlier begged off from getting up the mountains due to his diabetes problems.

Morales is scheduled to start rigid sparring sessions today with sparmates brought in from Tijuana and California.

“Morales has kept his 45 minutes of road work per day. This part of the training with the mountain stages has already begun.

?Later, he will run in flat lands to acquire velocity,” said a trusted insider from the Morales camp, as quoted by a leading Mexican boxing website.

In-between training, Morales spends time watching videos of past fights of Pacquiao, who is also training religiously at the Wild Card Boxing Club in Los Angeles under the guidance of trainer Freddie Roach.
