More and more boxing scribes are taking issue with some of the very radical and racial comments left by the boxing fans. More so Pacquiao fans than any other, although it’s not just exclusive to them. I have personally read hundreds upon hundreds of very ugly racial slurs left by fans at the end of boxing articles. Most of the time it’s only when a scribe writes something nice about Floyd Mayweather. Anything written that remotely compliments Floyd Mayweather Jr triggers a landslide of racial comments, usually attacking African Americans.
Recently, boxing scribe Lorne Scoggins took this on, and his point was made fairly quickly. Comments left after his article attacked him, attacked his faith in God, and attacked his beautiful wife. This type of behavior is plain and simply disgusting, and should be stopped.
In the Scoggins article, he asked a really simple question. What would Manny do? Manny Pacquiao certainly does not condone this type of behavior. All of these so called fans that leave these types of comments should be ashamed of themselves to be quite honest about it. There is absolutely no excuse or reason for anyone to attack another man’s wife, his faith in God, or him personally just because you happen to disagree with what he has to say.
Hopefully more and more boxing sites, and here at the Examiner will develop the software that will block and ban IP addresses from these types of people. Lorne Scoggins just so happens to be a Baptist Preacher, a pastor at a church in Arkansas. He’s a genuine class act human being who puts others in front of himself, and devotes his life to God. I don’t know about you, but I think the man deserves some respect, even if you disagree with his boxing takes.
The common response to this article will probably be that most of Manny’s fans do not behave this way. I do agree with that, however, it appears that whatever the minority percentage is that do leave racial comments, it’s pretty vocal and substantial. This is a sport, and Manny Pacquiao is a human being. Manny Pacquiao just so happens to be the best fighter in the world. This does not give anyone permission to attack, degrade, and or slander another person because a view is different.
I intend to have this conversation with Manny Pacquiao in person this September. I plan on getting his comments on what SOME of his fans have to say about African American people. I plan on sharing with him the handles of the people that call Floyd Mayweather a “monkey” and a “gorilla” and we will see what he has to say about this type of behavior.
I live in the state of Mississippi. This state has a history of racial divide, and hate. African American people have died just because of the color of their skin. African American people were hung from trees because they were born black, and for no other reason. They were called the N word, and they were called monkeys and gorillas for decades. For some boxing fan sitting comfortably behind his or her keyboard to use this type of language toward an African American, is reprehensible. For some boxing fan to attack a preacher in Arkansas, and to attack his wife just because they are too ignorant to understand the difference between being a fan, and a radical idiot, is disgusting at best.
