Good Guy Mayweather: Looking for love in all the wrong places

Don’t be surprised if the next serious ailment that a wistful Floyd Mayweather Jr. comes up with is an eye injury.

Don;t worry his spare or just sore ribs, the supposed problem which delayed his slapfest against Juan Manuel Marquez.

It’s the orbs that could be problematic.

If he does, and I only wish good health to Money May all day and every day, we will know the causation.

Mayweather has been looking for love in all the wrong places.

FJM Jr. is The Ring magazine cover subject for the just out August 2010 issue and the cover line is “Mayweather Vs. Mayweather-Who Is The A Real Floyd.”

Joe Santoloquito, an old hand at the Bible of Boxing, scribbled the lead story and does a goods job in describing the vastly opposing views the boxing public and the world at large seems to have of the mercurial Michigander who now resides in Las Vegas.

“I do want people to like and follow me,” Mayweather tells the boxing writer.

Ring, August 2010, Issue

“No, I don’t want to be looked at as a bad guy, because I know I’m not a bad guy, to to anyone who knows me.

“There is a lot of Little Floyd, you might say, still in me.

“But, people and fans, especially the media, have to understand you have to do certain things to sell a fight.”

Mayweather goes on in a similar vein and the writer makes it clear these soft, sensitive words flow from Floyd’s lips in a one on one setting “away from his minions.”

To hear Mayweather tell it, the fast talking, money tossing and totally flash person he cultivates is what keeps the groceries flowing into the refirgerators at his Big Boy Mansion and helps pay the bills for his kids.

“I think fans need to know there is a difference between the public me and the private me.”

You can read the rest at The Ring. I would supply a link but I don’t see one. Guess Uncle Oscar prefers you slugs to shell out the nine bucks for the magazine and I can’t say I blame him.

This economy is brutal, folks, so pitch in, help Oskie out. I did my part at the corner bodega but my accountant says I can write off the nine bucks under the heading of important rsearch.

(That’s why Vinnie Boombatz is so busy at his combination clam shack/auto upholstery/accounting office, you see.)

Mayweather, you’ll notice, stopped short of saying he would ditch his Bad Guy black hat before he fights Manny Pacquiao.

I can live with that, can’t you? Let him fulfill his Mr. Popularity/Good Guy fantasies after they fight…

What do you mean…if they fight?

Bob Arum says an announcement should come before June becomes July.

And Uncle Bob, he’s like George Washington, he never lies.
