One of my concerns about the alleged Mayweather – Pacquiao negotiations is that people on the periphery on both sides are talking as if they are going to win the fight when the intent here is just to negotiate the deal in the first place.
I’m afraid this fight is going to drown us in nonsense if it is made but I guess you must take some pain to have a gain. It would be contended most likely for the World Boxing Organization’s (WBO) welterweight (147 lbs.) belt Pacquiao has but do you expect Jose Sulaiman and his World Boxing Council (WBC) to step aside quietly and not have a say in this mega-fight?
Maybe Pacquiao would vacate the belt and have no sanctioning body other than the state commission the fight is being fought in be in charge. Kind of a less is more thing.
I’m reminded of that horrible decision in 1993 in San Antonio, Texas when Julio Cesar Chavez was awarded a draw against the far superior – on that night – Pernell Whitaker in a mega-fight.
If each fighter continues to take tune-ups, they will pocket over $15 million per and win easily while “The Fight” could net each $40 million in one night but a 50% chance of losing. It’s a big risk either way.
I believe Pacquiao makes for better copy so I cover him more. He seems more mature and grounded, and has more mature people around him than does Mayweather. This is not a minor consideration for a free-lance journalist and I believe it is the reason the majority of the media is more Pacquiao-friendly than Mayweather-friendly.
On any given day Mayweather, who is known to throw hundred dollar bills into crowds of people, is certainly more exciting, more flamboyant, and dresses flashier, but that grew tiresome long ago and “Money May” just can’t seem to out grow his childish bad-boy image.
It’s going to be time for these two boys to go back to work soon and I hope they are considering each other as serious opponents and a November 13 date is agreed upon which seems to be the earliest date and one with the least conflict with other sporting events.
I hope the big fight is in the cards because there really isn’t another fight involving either of these two that I would rather see.
