It’s Miguel Cotto’s boldest move since he signed a contract to fight Manny Pacquiao.
It may have zero effect on the Pacquiao-Floyd Mayweather negotiations but it’s still interesting to note that Cotto, on the verge of headlining Top Rank’s June 5 Yankee Stadium card in his challenge of WBA junior middleweight champ and perspiring rabbi Yuri Foreman, has made a promotional deal with Oscar de la Hoya and Golden Boy.
If you think Bob Arum was rooting for his landsman, Foreman, you ain’t see nothing yet…Just kidding, as Arum always roots mainly for his own pocket to bulge.
Bottom line to the bottom line, both Uncle Bob and Cousin Oskie would make a deal with Charles Manson if need be.
Both would prefer working with Mother Teresa types, naturally, but they are few and far between in the foxholes of big time boxing, you see.
Still, it’s an odd situation where Cotto The Fighter is under contract to Arum’s outfit while Cotto The Promoter has jumped into Oscar’s Golden bed at least in terms of running shows in boxing mad Puerto Rico.
Perhaps this linkup was inevitable since TR already does business with Peter Rivera of PR Best. Rivera formerly promoted Cotto and brought him into the Arum fold.
Mister Met, how loyal a mascot is he, really? Could he go free agent route, turn into Daddy Yankee?
Certainly, though Arum can be none too pleased to know that charismatic Cotto will now be working with Oskie and against his crew.
All those years, all those lucrative fights, all that money Arum so generously shared with Senor Cotto…is it all forgotten because Oscar showed up with his infamous Golden Suitcase?
This is about as shocking as lovable New York Mets’ mascot, Mister Met, switching allegiance to the team in The Bronx, turning himself into Daddy Yankee or something like that.
Say it ain’t so, toquayo.
In our convoluted world of fighters as promoters–looks like Joe Calzaghe Promotions went under and Floyd Mayweather Promotions affiliates with Golden Boy to do actual promotional work–you will see more of these entanglements in the years to come.
Cotto and Foreman will be batting–each other–at Yankee Stadium on June 5 (Top Rank)
Miguel Cotto, Golden Boy?
Who would have thunk it?
Let’s be clear, I am only wishing this Odd Couple years of boxing bliss.
I’m sure Uncle Bobalah joins me in saying, “Mazletov!”
Not to mention “vaya con Dios!”
