News came out today that Miguel Cotto, a world class boxer and promoter of fights in Puerto Rico, will partner up with Golden Boy Promotions to put on boxing events in Puerto Rico.
Bob Arum, the man who promotes Cotto’s own career through Top Rank, must be feeling the long blade of treachery in his back.
The promotional duo of Cotto and Golden Boy will present their first card on Telefutura on June 4.
Brought along from blue-chip prospect to elite fighter by Arum, there has been public explanation as to why Cotto did not work alongside Top Rank to bring his cards to television in the United States.
Since Cotto was beat into a bloody pulp by Antonio Margarito in 2008 and then destroyed by Manny Pacquiao last November, there has been speculation that the Puerto Rican has been less then pleased with Arum. The rumors take into account that Arum has defended Margarito to the hilt after being exposed of using plaster-like substance in his handwraps.
There are theories that Margarito used loaded gloves against Cotto, thus explaining the brutual punishment he delivered.
In July of 2009, Cotto signed a contract extension with Arum and Top Rank which keeps the fighter tied with the promotion through 2011.
