When Oscar De La Hoya launched his boxing promotional firm back in 2001, one of Oscar’s guiding tenants was to be a promoter that does right by boxers.
Over the last ten years De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions has been able to line the pockets of fighters such as Floyd Mayweather, Bernard Hopkins, and Shane Mosley, even when they did not deserve multi-million dollar purses, but today a situation crept into the boxing media spotlight which gives Mr. De La Hoya a Golden opportunity to show his willingness to support fighters being stiffed.
Argentina slugger Marcos Maidana released a public letter on Fightnews stating that his former manager Mr. Mario Margossian has not been consulting with him in negotiating potential fights, low-balled him in purse offers, and signed promotional agreements with Golden Boy and German-based Universum with out his consent.
Maidana also states that Margossian’s claim that the junior welterweight was unable to fight Timothy Bradley due to a back injury were fabrications and he is ready and willing to fight for a fair price.
So now, after reliving himself of Margossian’s managerial guidance, Maidana and his legal team would like copies of any promotional agreement that might of been made with Golden Boy and Margossian. Thus far, Golden Boy has not provided Margossian the contracts which could have a crucial effect on his career.
If Oscar and his team want to make a strong message about managerial corruption in boxing and prove that they are a clean promotional firm, they will provide Maidana copies of any existing contracts in a timely manner. I would go as far as advising Golden Boy to release the contracts publicly and expose either the chicaneries of Margossian, or a very public lie by Maidana.
You said there would be positive change for the fighters Oscar, now is the time to prove it.
