Slower and older, Marquez bests Vazquez

Los Angeles – A few years older and a steps slower, Mexican featherweights Rafael Marquez and Israel Vazquez tried to relive the magic of there first three bouts.

Marquez was able to even up their series two wins a piece by stopping Vazquez in the third round. After Marquez sent Vazquez to the canvas and created nasty cuts over both eyes, the bout was stopped by referee Raul Caiz Junior.

It would seem that Vazquez is headed into retirement and Marquez could be headed to a fight with Juan Manuel Lopez later in the year. Lopez, of Puerto Rico, came to Los Angeles and was ringside for the bout, while openly challenging the winner of the Marquez – Vazquez bout.

Perez – Mares ends in a draw

Twelve hard fought rounds ended in a disappointing majority decision between bantamweights Abner Mares, a product of the Hawaiian Gardens boxing program in Southeast Los Angeles, and Y onnhy Perez.

The fight was evenly fought with Mares controlling the action early, Perez turning up the heat on Mares in the middle rounds, and Mares apparently closing the show strongly in the final frames.

Closely fought yes, but Mares hand and foot speed, along with a higher activity level seemed to have been enough to decision Perez.

The final score cards read 115-113 (Mares) and 114-114 (twice).

A re-match between the two fighters would seem to be in order.
