Yahoo sports boxing scribe Kevin Iole recently ranked Floyd Mayweather Jr number one over the real pound for pound king Manny Pacquiao. Really? To be quite frank about it, ranking Floyd Mayweather Jr over the real pound for pound king Manny Pacquiao is pretty ignorant.
What would be the reasoning behind ranking Floyd over Manny? Mr Lole might say that it’s because Floyd Mayweather is undefeated, and because of how soundly he defeated Shane Mosley. I kindly counter that with a question. Who has Floyd fought throughout his career? An even more important question would be, who has Floyd fought and at what point in their careers did he fight them?

Pacquiao has risen from 105lbs and smashed legends into retirement on the way to the top. He’s defeated every Mexican legend put into his path. Pacquiao made Oscar De La Hoya quit on his stool and Mayweather had his hands full with him. Again, yes Mayweather is undefeated that can’t be debated, but who he’s defeated and when he defeated them is very much in question.
I asked the Chief of Officials of the state of Mississippi, Stan Nichols what his thoughts were on Pacquiao being ranked number two by Yahoo sports. Nichols made no bones about it, “Manny Pacquiao is number one hands down. There should be no debate about who should be ranked number one. Pacquiao has defeated the much more talented fighters, and he’s done it in convincing fashion.”
Mr Lole suggested that by Mayweather defeating Mosley so soundly, that’s enough to get him the top spot over Pacquiao. True enough Mayweather did cruise over Mosley but Pacquiao crushed De La Hoya. Pacquiao crushed Miguel Cotto, he put Hatton to sleep, and he made Joshua Clottey look like an amateur.
There is only one way that Floyd Mayweather Jr can be ranked number one and that’s when and IF he can defeat Pacquiao. Until that happens Mayweather is number two and Pacquiao is number one. Pacquiao as dominated his opponents in such fashion that the top ten really should like this….
