Talk of the Month: Rachel Donaire; Plus exclusive interview with rising star Nonito Donaire, Jr.

SAN FRANCISCO, California – Moving with a score that is fresh and vibrant, Rachel Marcial Donaire cannot just wait for tomorrow. She takes the Filipino Flash out to teach him to drive stick on his NSX.

Then, she shows him how to make a ‘military bed’. Without suspending her belief, they both get hijacked in a ‘flash of delight’!

For Rachel, Sunday is not a day of rest. She makes sure Nonito ‘Filipino Flash’ Donaire, Jr. has what he needs for the hours before and after his training. She just cannot slow down. She does not need horoscopes to rule out her day. It’s one hell of a ride, in fact, to some.

A sports enthusiast in her own right, Rachel ranks probably as the most popular wife of a boxer of our time. With Filipino Flash’s career somehow regressing being one of the most avoided fighters underscoring all failed attempts to perfect a contract, she takes time to deal with her husband’s fans on Facebook and, in fact, engaging a huge network of over two thousand friends, so to speak. One such productive task she has just accomplished is an exclusive interview with this author.

Rachel does not whine, does not sugarcoat the tough part of being a fashion model, a business manager and a wife of the rising star. She does not forget to thank the good people who have helped them most along the way.

For the Filipino Flash, he lays claim to all the marks of having a supportive wife, out of humility and inspiration. His boxing career may have lots of drama at the crossroads of his relationship with his father, Nonito Donaire, Sr. – his first professional boxing and martial arts trainer – but absolutely offers a compelling avenue above par for sports memoirs.

Here’s the unedited ‘straight-to-the-point’ transcript of the interview and video, as presented by Philippine News, with Nonito ‘Filipino Flash’ Donaire, Jr.:

Celebrity Headlines Examiner: What plans do you for your boxing career in the next five years?

Filipino Flash: I want to be able to move up to each weight class and hold a world title at each division before I move up to the next. I also want to be the first to be called an Undisputed Champion. As you know, it’s very difficult to get that accomplished because the other fighters don’t want to fight, but it’s still a goal of mine.

Celebrity Headlines Examiner: Who would you like to fight next? And why?

Filipino Flash: I’d like to fight Montiel next because he is in the 118 division. I’m getting too big for the 115 and Montiel holds two titles.

Celebrity Headlines Examiner: When are you going to challenge the ‘Big Guns’ in the upper division? And, who would you like to fight up there?

Filipino Flash: After Montiel I want to challenge Marquez because before I became a world champion, he was one of my dream matches. I trained hard because I envisioned one day we’d meet in the ring. Same goes for Juanma. When I get up in weight those are the guys I want to fight. I’d think I’d be able to fight Marquez hopefully by next year.

Celebrity Headlines Examiner: How do you feel about being in the Top Rank? Are you getting what you wanted for your fights?

Filipino Flash: Top Rank has a deep pool of talent. The only problem is is that sometimes, which seems like all the time to me, the big fish don’t want to fight me. Just this week I challenged Morel so I’d be Arce’s replacement. But he refused. I’ve called all of them out but when it comes to the table, none of them wants the fight (with me). I think it’ll get better when I move up in weight where I hope there are REAL fighters.

Celebrity Headlines Examiner: have you talked to Bob Arum about giving you a chance to fight as part of the co-main event of Pacquiao’s next fight?

Filipino Flash: I remember when I signed with Top Rank a reporter asked Arum if I would ever be in a Pacquiao undercard and he said that it was financially and morally a bad decision. He wanted me to be me and Pacquiao to be himself: separate avenues. But I recently discussed with them that I’d be honored to be under Manny’s card. So I guess we’ll see.

Celebrity Headlines Examiner: What can you say about the resumption of Pacquiao-Mayweather negotiations?

Filipino Flash: I’d rather not have a comment on the negotiations of Pacquiao-Mayweather. Rather I would like to say that I’m sure both parties want a fair playing field: Pacquiao wants to ensure Floyd comes in on weight and putting a $10 million penalty per pound; and Floyd wants Pacquiao to be clean. Both fighters are protecting themselves and I believe they want to fight. It’s up to the management and promoters to put it together. About 98% of the time, it’s the promoters that need to make the fight.

Celebrity Headlines Examiner: Do you have plans for any elective post in Bohol, Philippines?

Filipino Flash: I do not have any plans for any elective post in Bohol or anywhere in the Philippines. I know myself enough that as much as I do the desire to help our country, I also know I its not in my capacity to do so. I wouldn’t know how or where to start so what good would I do running in circles? I will help as much as I can, in the best ways I know how to make Philippines a better place. But I know my place isn’t in politics.

Celebrity Headlines Examiner: Any plans of having a baby with Rachel soon?

Filipino Flash: Ahhh babies… We’ ve discussed it and it seems to come up more often these days, but we both agree that it would be irresponsible because we aren’t financially ready. We also have to commit to our dream of getting married in the church first. More News on that will come soon =)
