For the time being, Manny Pacquiao has said that he is only concerned with the elections in his native Philippines, where he hopes to win a congressional seat.
His battle against entrenched rival Roy Chiongbian leaves him little time to think about boxing, and his schedule has been so hectic that he hasn’t seen Floyd Mayweather’s domination of Shane Mosley yet.
Despite this though talk is already rife that he and Floyd Mayweather will soon sit down to try to work out a terms again.
During the first round of discussions between the two, it was drug testing rather than the purse split which kept the sides from making the fight happen.
Since then though, Mayweather has said several times that since he outsells Pacquiao, he deserves the bigger split of the purse should the pair ever fight.
Speaking to Ryan Burton of BoxingScene after beating Shane Mosley, Mayweather said:
?but with or without Pacquiao, Floyd is going to be able to go out and make $20 million or $30 million a night. With or without him, I?m still able to do that.?
?I?m a boss, I only talk to bosses. He?s got to do numbers like I?m doing. What did him and (Juan Manuel) Marquez do, 300,000, 400,000? Congratulations. Got to step his game up. Got to step his game up. Got to step his pay-per-view numbers up. I average 1.3 million, with ease.?
Numbers are not yet in from Mayweather’s latest bout against Shane Mosley, but the pay per view figure is thought to be a big one, certainly much bigger than the 700k buys that Pacquiao vs. Clottey achieved in March. Against a similar quality opponent, with everything else being equal it might be a different story, but Mayweather still has the ability to sell his fights better through his trash talking as well as the fact that he is an American.
Whoever you think might be the better fighter and might win if the two ever do fight, Mayweather can now claim to be the bigger draw. In his eyes this means that he should get the biggest cut or the purse. Others would argue that as the pound for pound king, and still a better recent resume at welterweight, that Pacquiao deserves at least an equal share of the purse, if not the bigger cut.
