Former welterweight champion Antonio Margarito is back in the hunt. He returned Saturday night in Mexico before 17,000 fans to win a ten round unanimous decision over Roberto Garcia at junior middleweight.
Now Margarito has two options at the table. He spoke with BoxingScene.com’s Ernest Gabion and said he would consider moving up to 160-pounds to challenge WBO/WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez in a rematch. Margarito knocked Martinez out early in his career. The fight Margarito is trying to get is a welterweight showdown with WBO champion Manny Pacquiao.
Getting a fight with Pacquiao will only happen if the Filipino champ is unable to reach a deal with Floyd Mayweather Jr. Margarito told BoxingScene if Pacquiao ends up with Mayweather, then a move to 160 to fight Martinez would become a real possibility.
“That a fight that I would definately consider. Actually I was speaking about that fight with my trainer Robert Garcia, about going up to 160 to fight Sergio Martinez. Going up to 160 to fight Sergio Martinez is something that I would definately consider because I feel that he’s a smaller fighter [who is] fighting at a heavier weight,” Margarito told BoxingScene.com.
“It is something that I would definately do but the real big fight would be against Manny Pacquiao. That’s the fight that I would definately want to have, but if that doesn’t happen then I would definately consider Sergio Martinez.”
