It’s the time honored time for a prediction on the big fight this weekend between Floyd Mayweather, Jr. and Sugar Shane Mosley.
While studying this fight and looking for flaws that might make me the big winner late Saturday night for when I finally meet up with my corner bookie later in the week, I end up raising more questions than answering.
Mayweather remains the odds on favorite at about 4.5:1. Keep in mind anything over 3:1 is virtually prohibitive and we are talking about one of the pound for pound best against a good one but a 38 year-old last minute replacement in Mosley.
Further, this is just a fight to set up a bigger fight. This fight is to set up a Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather fight. But they couldn’t agree on a site or drug – testing last time and we have no proof they are any closer if Mayweather even gets past Mosley Saturday.
In fact, things are even more convoluted in that Mayweather has inserted an automatic rematch clause against Mosley if he were to lose to Mosley.
Does Mayweather really believe we would want to see him fight Pacquiao after he were to just come off a loss to the five loss, 38 year-old Mosley?
It’s more like he just doesn’t want Mosley to get a shot at Pacquiao.
Believe it, Mayweather had Mosley sign a contract unless it might not be enforceable based upon sportsmanship and bad charma.
So, to me, the question raised is if Mayweather were a prize fighter, willing to risk his shot at Pacquiao a second time by fighting Mosley, or is he a pound for pound “Wimp” who is avoiding Pacquiao while the Filipino is in his prime and willing to fight the American Mayweather at any time and any place?
