May 05, 2010 – Just last week Golden Boy Promotions C.E.O. Richard Schaefer was blowing the horns of Floyd Mayweather and Shane Mosley’s pay per view bout, openly stating that the figures for the event would topple the record of 2.15 million pay per view buys established by Mayweather’s 2007 fight with Oscar De La Hoya.
Gone are the days of a booming U.S. economy and guaranteed pay per view seller Oscar De La Hoya, because Schaefer’s very public statement that Mosley – Mayweather could reach 4 million buys has left the former Swiss Banker and now full fledged boxing charlatan with egg all over his face.
No matter how many Hooters restaurants and movie theatres carried the fight, or the fact that the price of the event was cut in half if you obtained a $30 rebate by Tecate Mexican beer, could leave Schaefer’s predictions come true.
Respected boxing journalist of Kevin Iole released a report on Monday putting the pay per view sales for Mayweather – Mosley at around 1.2 million buys, even a far cry from the 2 million buys Schaefer said the event was tracking at a few days before the fight.
How laughable are Schaefer’s predictions of a record breaking event and the possibility of 4 million buys? I wonder how humorous the sponsors of the event will find Richard’s miscalculation.
Bottom line, when Richard Schaefer opens his mouth about anything boxing related, take it with a grain of salt – the banker has completed his transformation into a boxing promoter.
