Floyd Mayweather Jr is undefeated in 40 professional fights. He was once rated the pound for pound king of boxing. He has defeated every fighter put in front of him. He has earned millions and millions of dollars and he drives a Rolls Royce. Floyd’s jewelry box is worth more than some third world countries. Floyd is in position to earn over 20 million for his fight against Mosley. He will earn up to 40 million to fight Manny Pacquiao.
Legacy? He doesn’t care about legacy. Floyd is all about the Benjamin’s, the almighty dollar. Manny Pacquiao fans spend countless hours in boxing forums bashing him. He is called every name in the book including some rather tasteless racial slurs. Is Floyd innocent of talking smack? Oh no, not at all. Floyd brings on most of the hate that he gets. But does he care? I don’t think so.
While covering the fights in Tunica, MS at Fitzgerald’s Casino, I spoke with the fans about Floyd’s brash behavior and of his detractors. Gene Hendrix of Southaven, MS chimed in with his thoughts, ” Floyd is about the money and not about the fans. Floyd doesn’t give a crap about what people think of him, he has everything that he wants.” I also spoke with Stan Nichols, of Brandon, Mississippi. Nichols is the President of USA Boxing’s Southern Association. Stan talked about Mayweather’s personality, ” Floyd is a great fighter that has earned a lot of money in his career. What some fan from Cebu thinks of him is for certain the last thing he cares about.”
Floyd could care less what Pacquiao fans think of him. Floyd wakes up each morning in his mansion. He cranks up the Rolls Royce and drives to the gym. More than likely he has all of his meals prepared for him, and brought to him.
Floyd can travel the world when he wants and where he wants. He can buy whatever car he wants to and he can buy any Rolex watch that he chooses to. The last thing on Floyd’s mind is the Pacquiao fans that love to hate him. Floyd laughs at his detractors, he thrives on the hate that he receives from them.
With all of that said, one day when Floyd is in his 70’s or 80’s he may reflect back and evaluate his behavior. Perhaps there is a chance that he will realize what could have been. Floyd does have his share of fans, but could you imagine the amount of fans that he would have if he was a humble man like Manny Pacquiao?
At the moment Floyd Mayweather could care less who hates him. Floyd will deposit about 20 plus million dollars on Monday. What some of Pacquiao’s fans think of him will be the last thing on his mind.
