Casimero defends belt vs. Mexican

THE FIGHT between World Boxing Organization (WBO) light flyweight titlist Ivan Calderon and interim WBO light flyweight champion Johnreil Casimero will have to wait as both unbeaten world champions will defend their crowns against different opponents on June 12 at the Madison Square Garden in New York.

?It?s already a go,? veteran international promoter Sammy Gello-ani told Sun.Star Cebu yesterday.

The 35-year-old Calderon, 33-0-1 with six KOs, will take on Mexican Jesus Iribe, while Casimero will face Mexican prospect Ramon Garcia.

Gello-ani, the promoter of the 20-year-old Casimero, said that the winner of both bouts will face each other in August.

Assuming that both Calderon and Casimero defend their titles, they will possibly be facing off in Puerto Rico. However, Gello-ani said there is a chance that he could bring the huge boxing bout here in the Philippines.

?It could be in Puerto Rico but I could try to bring it to the Philippines. It is still open,? he said.

Gello-ani said that the change of opponent of Casimero, who has a perfect 14-0 record with eight KOs, will work in his favor.

?He has been training non-stop. The two-week postponement is good. It is better that he has to fight Garcia first before Calderon because Garcia is easier,? said Gello-ani.

?If Casimero is that good then he?ll win this fight (against Garcia).?
