For those of you who may jump all over me and say I spelled the title wrong, that was done on purpose. It’s a hip hop song sang by Roy Jones Jr, and it’s pronounced “musta” forgot. I think a lot of boxing fans, and some boxing writers “musta” forgot a few things about Roy Jones Jr, and what he has done for this sport for many years. Funny how quick some pathetic people forget what this man has done for boxing. When you read some of the comments made from the fans about Roy Jones, it’s down right pathetic. Even a few dismal, pessimistic, boxing writers get their kicks bashing Roy Jones Jr, just because he’s not the fighter that he once was.
Last weekend I paid 7 dollars on a ticket, and about 10 bucks on popcorn and a drink, and watched Roy Jones vs. Bernard Hopkins at the movie theater in Pearl, Mississippi. Roy Jones Jr has a huge following in Mississippi. He is from Pensacola, Florida, which is not too far from Mississippi. Roy has fought in Mississippi a few times as a pro. I recently caught his last appearance in Biloxi, MS, against Jeff Lacy. It will probably be his last great performance, one that I am very fortunate to have been ringside for.
So why the hate toward Roy Jones Jr? I have read comments, very negative nasty,comments from fans directed at Roy. Is this really necessary? One could argue that if Roy is going to continue to fight, then he is fair game. Well I agree with that, but do we really need to be so nasty toward the guy? I’m guessing not.
Was charging the public $50.00 US dollars for the PPV of the Jones vs. Hopkins fight crazy? Yes, I think so. I do not think that the public should have been charged that much for that fight. Precisely why I went to the theater and watched it.
Roy Jones Jr’s accomplishments in the sport of boxing are amazing. He should be respected, and not bashed by people. It’s easy to criticize and bad mouth people ,it’s not so easy to accomplish the things that those we hate on have accomplished though.
