Michael Domingo spars with Japanese champ

MICHAEL Domingo is helping World Boxing Council bantamweight titlist Hozumi Hasegawa prepare for his unification bout with World Boxing Organization bantamweight king Fernando Montiel as his chief sparring partner in Japan.

Aside from Hasegawa getting quality sparring sessions, ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer believes that his 30-year-old ward is also gaining experience from sparring with one of the best bantamweights and that could also help in the veteran ALA boy?s fight with Luis Melendez.

Domingo will face Melendez, who last fought Z Gorres, at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel, next month.

?This is a good exposure for Michael. Hasegawa is one of the better bantamweights. Michael is getting good quality sparring with a world champion and it will prepare him for bigger fights,? Aldeguer said.

Domingo, who is 39-14-2 with 17 KOs, has been sparring with the 29-year-old Hasegawa for close to a week. He will return to the Philippines a week before his fight with Melendez, fully prepared to avenge his stable mate and close pal Gorres.

Aldeguer said that the much-anticipated fight between Domingo and Melendez might be moved to a later date in the same month.

?The fight might be moved because we have concerns on the contracts and we also want to enhance the preparation because this is a big card. We want to market it really well,? said Aldeguer.

Jimrex Jaca is also seeing action in the undercard after a successful comeback last Jan. 23 at the Cuneta Astrodome against Indonesian KO artist Ramadhan Weriu.
