Manny Pacquiao-Andre Berto: Don’t play with wet matches

It’s a lethal combination, it really is.

I’m talking about being na?ve and stupid simultaneously which is what you would have to be to publicly state that Manny Pacquaio can, should or will fight Andre Berto.

If I was Berto or one of his 37 fans, I wouldn’t be holding my breath for a Pacman Payday.

I thought all kids were taught that “playing with matches” can get you burned but evidently that is not the case in Scribbler Land.

Nothing against Berto’s ring skills because hes got them.

Although he really has not had an outstanding performance against a really Class A, top echelon welterweight, you can’t blame it on the Haitian American fighter as he only fights who his handlers put in front of him.

His litmus test would’ve been Sugar Shane Mosley and they were supposed to fight in Las Vegas at the end of January but then came the earthquake devastation in Haiti and Berto pulled out of the fight understandably.

From Josh Booc, Facebook

It’s not coincidental that Berto got his own ?donation? in step aside money when his bout with Mosley was aborted, cleairng the way for the Mosley-Floyd Mayweather biggie which goes down May 1.

The common denominator between Money May and Berto is ubiquitous adviser Al Haymon, boxing’s equivalent of the Wizard of Oz, the man behind the curtain who moves his fighters around for the better paydays like pieces on a chess board.

Haymon is the biggest obstacle to a Pacman-Berto bout.

While Pacquiao promoter Bob Arum pretends to loathe his former client Mayweather, he really does intensely dislike Haymon. These two don’t go out for wine and cheese parties or hobnob at any country clubs together.

That’s a well known fact in boxing circles and, whether some wide-eyed scribes choose to ignore it, friends can make fights with friends quicker and more often than they do with people they hate.

That’s not very sporting, I know, but we call it the boxing business for a reason.

Berto’s fan base, as seen in the paltry attendance in Sunrise, Fl., for his victory over Carlos Quintana is limited.

He wouldn’t be an easy fight for anybody including Mosley, Mayweather and Pacquiao, the Unholy Trinity at the top of the 147 pound division.

Berto also has the commercial misfortune to have as his home base Winter Haven, Fl. I know the Red Sox used to hold spring training there but, as for fights, I think they only happen in the local bars and the drunk tank.

I guess the original bouts happen in the saloons and then the rematches take place in the hoosegow. Some of them are what you might call immediate rematches.

So let’s review, Arum despises Haymon; Berto is no ticketseller; Berto is not an establiashed PPV fighter and Berto is ?a tough out? for even the peaking Pacman.

Like I said, being na?ve and stupid is a lethal combination.

Why am I even writing about this fight which will never happen?

If Berto really wants to fight a Pacquiao, he will have to attack Brother Bobby,.

I see only one way for Berto get into the Big Leagues and that’s the same way he had the Mosley match lined up for him, with Haymon pulling the strings while Lou DiBella flaps his lips.

For example, Haymon could match young lion Berto against young lion Paul Williams.

It would only take a self conversation as Bossman Al handles Williams as well.

So put that on your list also, your list of fights we shall never see.

So much for the Dumb and the Clueless but lest I be regarded as a sourpuss, let me reference fellow Examiner Colin Seymour’s exquisite shot at egomaniacal Floyd Mayweather.

“No one probing Floyd Mayweather Jr. on HBO?s 24/7 will detect any human growth hormone. Or any human growth. Or perhaps any human at all.

“What a piece of work this guy is. United States Drug-Testing Agency enforcers can poke all they want, but Mayweather himself freely reveals how little substance flows beneath his wiring and electrodes.”

I do not know if even Pacquiao would be able to land such a clean shot on Mayweather.

I rolled my shoulders when I read those lines and then broke into a paroxysm of laughter.

Is that any way to describe a young man who considers himself some sort of mixture of Dr. Martin Luther King and Malcolm X, at least in his phony crusade for random drug testing?

See more from Seymour? Go right here.

I hope so because here’s one boss scribe who actually knows what time it is. And I don’t mean 7:45 am, Pacific Daylight Time.
