WBO Featherweight world champion Scott Harrison wants the chance to prove he’s the best boxer in the world by stepping into the ring with Marco Antonio Barrera.
Scott was ringside for the third meeting of Erik Morales and Barrera in Las Vegas on Saturday, and despite witnessing two of the best pound for pound fighters in the world battle out another epic, he is desperate to fight the winner on the night, Marco Antonio Barrera.
“I’d love to fight him at whatever weight he wants,” said Harrison. “I believe I’m the best in the world and I want to prove it.”
Manager, Frank Maloney, was also ringside and is planning to sit down with promoter Frank Warren over the next few days to plan Scott’s next move.
“Scott really fancies the fight and feels he can exploit some weaknesses he has seen,” said Maloney. “It’s probably a better fight for him than one with Morales.”
It could well come down to how much money is on the table. Titles are of no interest to Barerra. He is recognised as the world number one at Featherweight and now Super Featherweight regardless of who holds what version of what belt. A chance to add Scott’s WBO belt to his accolades will mean nothing to the Mexican.
And victory over Morales has put Marco Antonio Barrera firmly in the driving seat of world boxing. A 17,000 capacity crowd packed the MGM Grand and millions of boxing fans around the world saw it live via pay-per-view. Barrera could name his price for a fourth battle, not least because he won the third on a majority decision – and it was that close.
And then there’s the Manny Pacquiao defeat to avenge. Again, Barrera would pocket a fortune from that fight.
The world is Barrera’s oyster. We’ll just have to wait and see what the two Franks, Maloney and Warren, can do to entice the boxing legend into a ring with Scotland’s Scott Harrison.
