The name of boxer Ana “The Hurricane” Julaton may not ring a bell for most of Filipino boxing fans.
But in the world of female prize fighting, the Filipina-American is hailed by many as the woman version of Manny Pacquiao.
The 28-year-old Julaton tries to enhance her reputation when she faces Lisa “Bad News” Brown for the vacant WBA (World Boxing Association) Female Super Bantamweight title on March 27 in Casino Rama in Ontario, Canada.
Bidding to become the undisputed world champion at 122 lbs., the reigning IBA and WBO Super Bantamweight titleholder said she’s ready and highly motivated for her third straight title fight.
“My conditioning is great and I’m excited,” said Julaton last Monday via Skype interview at the GMA-7 compound in Quezon City.
“I like to showcase great boxing just like in the past. More importantly, I want to represent the Philippines in this fight,” Julaton, wearing a black shirt that says “Proud to be Pinoy.”
The fight will be aired live over GMA-7 on March 28 from 3-4 p.m.
Born in San Francisco and whose father and mother, Cesar and Ahmelia Bonifacio, were full-blooded Filipinos from Pozzorubio, Pangasinan and Manila respectively, Julaton is coming off a unanimous decision win against American Donna Biggers to become the first female with Filipino blood to capture the WBA title in San Francisco last December, or four months after wresting the vacant IBA crown at the expense of the Kelsey Jeffries in a 10-rounder.
Against Brown, Julaton, who sports a 6-1-1 record, is in for tough challenge.
