It seems as if Manny Pacquiao’s love of chess not only applies to the board, it applies in life too. Manny vs. floyd has been quite the chess game. So far, it appears as if Manny is one move ahead of Floyd, one or two moves from checkmate?
Pacquiao has done everything he needed to do in order to make the big Mayweather showdown happen. He’s moved his chess pieces correctly with each turn. Floyd on the other hand? Well, he’s struggled with his moves. Floyd’s move in the public relations department has not gone well. Floyd’s move with the steroids allegations has not done him well either. Manny countered and made a move of his own. He hired an attorney and filed a lawsuit for slander.
Floyd made his move and demanded that Pacquiao undergo Olympic style blood testing. Pacquiao countered and said, “Nope, not happening.” Pacquiao countered again, and said, “I don’t need Mayweather.”
There are reports out there that claim that Floyd’s money situation is in trouble. True or not, 30 million dollars for fighting Pacquiao sure would come in handy. Mayweather’s horrible chess moves have cost him dearly, now he must defeat Shane Mosley, and then maneuver around a rematch clause in order to get his shot at Pacquiao. Manny’s moves have stuffed his bank account full, cemented his legacy as an all time great, and earned his place in the hall of fame on the first ballot. Mayweather’s moves have put his legacy in question, have boxing fans questioning his heart, and has forced him into a must win situation against Shane Mosley.
As I have covered the Mississippi boxing circuit from Tunica, MS to Biloxi, MS it’s apparent how bad the fans want this fight to happen. Stan Nichols, Chief of Officials state of Mississippi, commented on this fight a few times during my conversations with him. Nichols believes that if the fight were ever to come to fruition, the outcome would depend on which man strays from their game plan the most. I spoke with the Mississippi Athletic Commissioner, Jon Lewis a few times about this fight as well. Lewis both times gave Pacquiao a lot of respect, and spoke about the impact that Pacquiao has had in boxing. Pacquiao has made all the right chess moves thus far.
Chess is a very calculative game. One wrong move, and it’s game over.
