Gerry Penalosa is certainly one of the most gifted Pinoy boxers. Even at the latter stages of his career, he is still a formidable opponent for any of the elite fighters in his division. Currently, he is in Dallas to show support to Manny Pacquiao and enjoy the festivities as a fan. Read more about what he had to say.
OS: What do you think about the decision in Pinoy Power 3? Many thought that you had won your fight.
GP: First of, I want to thank everyone who supported, trusted and those who thought I won. But you know, the judges saw differently and we don’t control them. I think I lost because it was their promotion and the judges favored them a little bit. But we can’t do anything because that’s how they saw it and I respect it. It hurts but I accept it.
OS: Right now, do you plan to fight again or retire?
GP: Soon, I’ll make a decision. I’ll talk to my family soon, but if you ask me I want to fight because I love boxing. But if there’s a chance that I can give another honor to our country, I’ll fight again.
OS: If you want to continue fighting. Who would you fight again? Is it Montiel?
GP: Of course, I want a champion; if ever (fight again). But I will still think it through because boxing is difficult it takes sacrifices, lives are at stakes and I have a family to think about. I don’t want them to see me boxing all the time. I want to spend some time with my family.
OS: If you retire. Would you want to stay in boxing as a trainer?
GP: I don’t think so because I have no patience and I’m strict. The boxer and I just might end up butting heads. I think it’s better that I just stay a fan and support them. Right now, I’m enjoying myself as a fan doing thing such as clapping, taking pictures, and videos with family. I never experienced these things as a fighter.
OS: Right now, there are a lot of talented Pinoy boxers. What do you think about the fact that many of them are getting opportunities now show their skills?
GP: We are especially thankful to Manny Pacquiao for opening the door. Because of Manny Pacquiao, many talented and skillful Pinoy boxers were discovered. I hope we keep getting those opportunities.
OS: What do you think will happen in the Pacquiao vs. Clottey fight?
GP: Pacquiao by knockout in the 10, 11 or 12th round.
