DALLAS, Texas – After the steroid controversy unfairly put upon Pacquiao and the fall out of the negotiations between Pacquiao and Mayweather, people expected that many fans will be turned off and show their disgust for the fighters.
When it was announced that Pacquiao’s next fight will be against Clottey at Texas stadium, many of the critics said that it will be difficult to sell out the event. Not only because of possible repercussions from the controversial negotiations with Mayweather, but also that Filipinos might not necessary travel a long distance to watch their hero fight.
But during a media conference call with Arum, a couple of weeks ago, he stated that the fight is scheduled to only have about 8,000 tickets left for the event. It certainly shows that Pacquiao star power should not be doubted anymore.
In addition, Filipinos has made many be aware of their buying power. The Filipino market has long been overlooked, but since Pacquiao came to the scene, they have made their presence known in a major way. Still, many still doubted of their buying power and if Filipinos such as other great sport fans here in America will travel just to see their favorite team or athlete perform.
There shouldn’t be any doubt now, as many Filipinos from all over came to see Pacquiao during his media day. With them, were flags, posters and magazines in their hands to show their support for Pacquiao. Also noticeable is the amount of non-Filipinos waiting to see a glimpse of Pacquiao while yelling his name.
No doubt that Pacquiao is the main draw now in the sport considering the success of his bout with Clottey, despite the latter’s questionable drawing power and some of the attention being given to the upcoming fight of Mayweather vs. Mosley.
