There is little time for rest in the life of a boxing trainer. Guiding pugilists is an occupation that requires much time, dedication and commitment from all parties involved and the process can sometimes be exhausting. Another requirement that is often necessary is the willingness to travel, as some trainers have been the world over through their involvement in the sport.
From all reports, Manny Pacquiao’s training camp for his upcoming clash with Joshua Clottey is coming along nicely but this weekend trainer Freddie Roach had to break camp and head to nearby Las Vegas to attend to other matters. Roach was in town for his new prot?g? Jose Benavidez’ bout on the Pinoy Power 3/Latin Fury 13 undercard and the result was a definitive success.
At yesterday’s weigh in Benavidez spoke briefly about his early career and claimed that he is learning much from training at the Wild Card alongside the world’s best fighters. Benavidez’ appears to have much potential as he had no problem whatsoever stopping Carrizo Spring, Texas’ John Vega in the first round.
From the beginning of the bout Benavidez established himself as the superior fighter as he rocked Vega with blazing combinations. Benavidez soon took his attack to the body and Vega had seen enough, turning away and shaking his head as if to tell the referee he had seen enough. Another first round knockout for Benavidez, who improves to 2-0.
Roach will surely jet back to Los Angeles as soon as possible to rejoin Pacquiao in camp as they gear up for another huge moment in the Filipino icon’s career. As a trainer you have to be prepared to work with fighters on all levels imaginable and Roach’s time at Pinoy Power this weekend was evidence of such.
