Pacquiao baits Mayweather trap by winning, not shining bright

HOLLYWOOD–Young, red-blooded men, especially the most macho ones, hate to admit it.

But they know it’s true and so do most women.

The typical guy does not want to have the hottest woman, the knock the wind out of you with her stunning gorgeousity (is that a real word?) female as his social companion.

When it comes to the knockout lookers, it’s just too much work, too much psychic and sometimes physical strain.

Unless you can build a moat around her and then fill it with killer whales, you’ve got to constantly be on the watch for poachers and their asocial ilk. You can trust, but as Nikita Khrushchev used to say it, you’ve also got to verify.

You have Beyone Knowles on your arm, you better have flash, cash and a pack of bloodhounds for security reasons. I know you would drink her dirty bath water but so would every other alleged hetero male. Not that there is anything wrong with that…

In other words, sometimes you can look just too good.

So it is with Manny Pacquiao now two weeks away from his March 13 Dallas title defense against rugged but not sensational challenger Joshua Clottey.

The question before you, the jury, is: Does Pacman hurt his chances of luring the skittish Floyd Kill Joy Mayweather Jr. into a ring confrontation if he swamps the Ghanaian?

I submit to you that he does, that by stopping or knocking out the physically strong Clottey, a vertiable welterweight, Pacquiao might scare Mayweather so far into the deep woods we may never see him again.

The great trainer and ex-middleweight contender Georgie Benton had a familiar refrain for any one of his warriors who was having a sluggish night in the ring.

“Just win, don’t worry about looking good, just win and look good next time,” Professor B would shout to his fighter.

Might the equally able motivator and tutor Coach Freddie Roach either say or at least be thinking the opposite against Clottey?

He might because, if you really want to set the trap for Mayweather, then Pacman needs to be content with outpointing Clottey, with just simply winning in Cowboys Stadium.

Winning big on points is likely okay but battering and pummeling Clottey all over the State of Texas is not going to lure Mayweather into the ultimate showdown for these two superstars.

Pacman and Roach may not have a real worry here as Clottey comes to fight despite his habit of slowing down in the stretch.

The best possible outcome for Pacman, reduced to laying some Mayweather bait, is to win but not to look spectacular.

I know it goes against all logic, runs contrary to the spirit of athletic competition, but just winning this night in Arlington is the best possible outcome for the Pacman.

That would leave a little room for Mayweather criticism, some mental fodder for his egomaniacal mind, and it just might snare him for a 2011 bout against the Pinoy Idol.

If Pacquiao destroys Clottey, he may also destroy any chance of ever matching his prodgious skills against the prodgious skills of L’il Floyd.

Problem is, unlike the pedestrian Clottey, Manny does not know how to take his heavy foot off the damned gas pedal.

Taking it easy doesn’t translate for Pacman.

Victory is mandatory against Clottey but shining like new money?

It’s in Pacquiao’s best future interests not to.

He’s the guy who would walk into the nightclub with two Beyonces, one on each side. Homie’s got it like that. (Note to wife Jinkee and twin sister, Twinkee, I joke, I joke.)
